Cameron and I met in college 22 years ago. We were taking the same art history class, and once we finally started talking, it was hard to stop. We have the kind of close friendship that always picks up where it left off... we sometimes don't hear from one another for years, but once we start talking... well, it's hard to stop.
I was thrilled that she was able to fly out to California from Texas to be my bridesmaid recently, and the brief time we spent catching up was not nearly enough. I miss having her around to talk to, and our annual gabfests only make me wish I could see her more often. Today's her birthday, and I wanted to give her something special, so I put together this mix just for her.
Her taste in music can be hard for me to pin down, because I never know what she is listening to at the moment. Historically her taste has ranged from T. Rex, David Bowie, Patti Smith, and Velvet Underground to Roy Harper, Memphis Minnie, Tori Amos, and Woody Guthrie. She is usually open to roots music, traditional folk, old country and western, and as I recently discovered, she counts the Dixie Chicks as a guilty pleasure. The Monkees track has special significance... she and I went to my first Monkees concert together back in 1986. I dragged her along, and I think she enjoyed it despite herself. She later admitted to having liked Mike Nesmith, so i chose a song that is very "Mike". This one's pretty heavy on the twang, but then again, she likes it like that... at least I THINK she does!

The first time I listened to this mix, I was at work. It was one of those rare mixes that I could work equally well with word and image while listening.
Have you ever found a pair of broken-in jeans at a thrift store for 3.00 that fit you perfectly? The tag may have been too eroded from washing to read where the jeans came from, but the magic was therefore multiplied. It is this way with this bday mix. Thank you oodles for such a clever mix of music I'm familiar with and music that's new yet feels like that perfect pair of broken-in jeans!
I could swear I've heard 'Anchorage' before, but can't place where or when. I'm totally in love with the refrain of 'Texas seems so big...but you know you're in the largest state of the union when you're anchored down in Anchorage'!
this is a lovely birthday gift, and I'm sure it was appreciated. loved the Bobbie Gentry, Nina Simone, Calexico, Roberta Lynn w/ Thurl Ravenscroft & the Mellomen and of course that Gene Autry track. years ago a good friend of mine was stuck alone at my house for some reason. when I returned, she confessed that she'd sneaked into my bedroom to play my "Anchorage" 7" single and she listened to it about a dozen times. she must have been totally nuts about that song... and you've reminded me why. what a great song! nice work here.
ps. Taste of India is indeed located in the U-Dist of Seattle, but it's on Roosevelt, a few blocks west of the made drag, called "The Ave." there are several great Indian restaurants around there. let's try one on your next visit to Seattle, huh?
